Intense, powerful, and compelling, Matterhorn is an epic war novel in the tradition of Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and James Jones’s The Thin Red Line. It is the timeless story of a young Marine lieutenant, Waino Mellas, and his comrades in Bravo Company, who are dropped into the mountain jungle of Vietnam as boys and forced to fight their way into manhood. Standing in their way are not merely the North Vietnamese but also monsoon rain and mud, leeches and tigers, disease and malnutrition. Almost as daunting, it turns out, are the obstacles they discover between each other: racial tension, competing ambitions, and duplicitous superior officers. But when the company finds itself surrounded and outnumbered by a massive enemy regiment, the Marines are thrust into the raw and all-consuming terror of combat. The experience will change them forever. Written by a highly decorated Marine veteran over the course of thirty years, Matterhorn is a spellbinding and unforgettable novel that brings to life an entire world—both its horrors and its thrills—and seems destined to become a classic of combat literature.

A guide to the superb 145km trek around the Matterhorn, walking anti-clockwise from Zermatt, with a huge variety of scenery and culture. As the Matterhorn straddles the Swiss / Italian frontier, the trek visits both Switzerland and Italy, each with its own unique traditions, way of life and scenery. The Tour goes over high passes via Zinal, Arolla and Breuil, visiting charming alpine villages where life has hardly changed for centuries, providing a precious insight into local life. Not only is the Matterhorn seen from all sides, but there are also superb vantage points for views of many of the other high summits of the region. The Tour of the Matterhorn has been documented only in the last few years but the paths it uses are often ancient ways over passes leading from one valley to another. The tour includes two glacier crossings and usually takes about eight to ten days to complete. This guide includes suggestions for shorter variants as well as information for the ascent of peaks along the way.

Absorbing adventure novel about a sky-boat voyage to the Matterhorn."We saw the earth beneath us arched like a reversed sky - a great gulf of air, deepest in the middle, and with cliff-like shores of Alpine ranges. We were in the sky, but a strange sky of intense Prussian blue. Clouds formed below us, the evaporization taking place from snow-peaks warming under the sun; but above and around us was that deep, uncanny sea of metallic blue, marvelous in its luminous depth."Reprint of the original edition from 1897.

John and Billy Kyburg were thirteen-year-old twin boys. Next came Sally, a twelve-year-old girl; then Sadie, an eight-year-old girl; and finally a five-year-old boy named Benny. That spring, their grandfather had died and left all the children a small charter fishing boat. They lived in a small seaport village named Pirates Cove. It was given that name because, when you came into the harbor, there was a little cove surrounded by tall trees where pirates used to hide their ships from the law in the olden days.

John and Billy Kyburg were cleaning the Matterhorn on a Saturday in May. They kept her windows sparkling, her chrome polished, her fiberglass body cleaned and polished, and her decks swabbed (old sailor talk for mopping). The Matterhorn had become a symbol of pride for the people of Pirates Cove. It had been involved in two water rescues, and the boat used to land the biggest bluefish in the $25,000 bluefish tournament.

Sally, Sadie, and Benny Kyburg walked into Pirates Cove Snack Bar early Saturday morning. Their twin brothers Johnny and Billy were turning fourteen years old the following Monday on the Fourth of July. After saying hello to Mom, Dad, and Grandma Sadie, they quickly got to the point. They wanted to have a birthday party for the twins. Mrs. Kyburg asked, “What do you have in mind?” Sally spoke, “It was actually Sadie’s idea to take the twins on the Matterhorn to New York City to see the Fourth of July fireworks. The snack bar is closed Mondays, and the whole family could go.” Mr. and Mrs. Kyburg nodded their heads. They both agreed it was a wonderful idea. Mrs. Kyburg said they should also invite Chris and Bobby Williams. They were twins who moved to Pirates Cove from Boston, Massachusetts, four years ago. They were both in Johnny and Billy’s class and were constant companions of the Kyburg twins since they moved here. Their father was transferred from a Boston hospital to be the head surgeon at a state university hospital a few miles from Pirates Cove. Both sets of twins played in a summer baseball league and were looking forward to play for the Pirates Cove High School JV team in the spring. It was 8:00 a.m., and it was time to open the snack bar for breakfast. They all decided to make plans for the party later that night.

Pirate’s Cove was a small fishing village, and everyone was talking about how the Kyburg kids’ boat, the Matterhorn, was used to win the $25,000 prize for catching the biggest bluefish. Mr. Kyburg was too busy in the snack bar to take people out for hire, but he said he talked to their uncle Raymond on their mother’s side who had a captain’s license. Uncle Raymond was looking forward to the for-hire jobs. He had to sell his fishing boat because the engine seized. He didn’t have enough money to replace it. He was working as a handyman, doing odd jobs, and was anxious to get back to sea.

This operational history of the XX (20th) Bomber Command and its combat missions from India and China in 1944 and 1945 traces the development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress program and the Allied plans to stage long-range bombers through China for strikes against Japan's strategic industries. Each of the 49 combat missions flown by the XX Bomber Command from India and China is examined, producing the first detailed history of the B-29 campaign flown from these countries. The book is written almost exclusively from primary source materialâWorld War II documents, crew member memoirs, and personal interviews. Special sections within the book examine issues related to flying across the âHumpâ between India and China; General Curtis LeMay's reorganization of B-29 operations; and the night fighter defense of the B-29 forward airfields in China.
